Imagine being able to ‘print’ a toy, or a model/figurine or even a broken/missing part of things you own, in the comfort of your home. That’s what 3D printing is about and MakerBot has been doing this since 2009. The company started off as an open-source 3D project but now it can lay claim as THE company that brought 3D printing to the masses.

MakerBot wants to take 3D printing even further, into more homes and schools, and it looks like they might just do that with the Replicator Mini that was announced at MWC 2014.

The Mini is based on Makerbot’s legendary Replicator, which is in its fifth generation now, and is perfectly sized for a small desk at home or at school. It has been designed to be reliable, durable and easy-to-use. The Replicator Mini runs the, soon to be released, free MakerBot Desktop software and MakerBot will also launch a mobile app to monitor your projects.

Beginners need not worry about learning to use the Replicator for the first time though as MakerBot has guides and even video tutorials to get you going. For those who simply want to jump in and start printing, just head on over to Thingiverse, download a 3D design, load up your filament and start printing.

Personal 3D printing is still an expensive hobby but MakerBot hopes that, with widespread adoption, the cost of the printer and the filament will come down. There are other DIY 3D printers around but it’s safe to say that MakerBot is the de facto personal 3D printing company on the planet. For parents and hobbyist groups that can afford it, the Replicator Mini will be a perfect example of a gift that keeps on giving.

The MakerBot Replicator Mini is priced at US$1,375.00 and your purchase also includes a small spool of MakerBot Natural PLA filament. You can place your order now but MakerBot will start shipping them only in Spring. Shipment to Malaysia will set you back around US$245 so make sure you find out everything you need to know before deciding on one.
