Sony kicked off Mobile World Congress 2014 at Barcelona by announcing the successor to the Z1: the Xperia Z2. It looks much like its predecessor with the OmniBalance design, front and back glass panels, and overall good looks.

In an impressive feat of engineering — Xperia Z2 at 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2 mm — is actually narrower and thinner than Z1, though able to bump the 1080p TRILUMINOS display from 5 to 5.2 inches.

Retaining the 20.7-megapixel camera, it can now capture 4K resolution videos, and 120fps slow motion clips (though only at 720p). It adopts the Handycam’s SteadyShot feature, an digital image stabilization technology from Sony, which also means it is not the superior optical image stabilization found on flagships like the Lumia 1020.

Much of the ‘engine’ remains the similar: Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC (a newer SKU: MSM8974AB), 2.3GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, 16GB storage. It also retains the IPX5 and IPX8 waterproofing standard.

The two obvious upgrades would be its memory and battery — there is a 3GB RAM and a 3200mAh battery found on the Z2. Xperia Z2 also has a noise canceling technology, but only works with a special headset connected. The headset is bundled with the phone.

Sony said the Xperia Z2 will be available worldwide from March onwards. The device ships with Android 4.4 KitKat in a choice of black, white, or purple color options.
